Fascinating Perspective

Of all the critical literary theories -- the one I mostly relate to is Reader Response Theory.  I do believe that we as readers engage in the process of co-creating a book with the author as we read.  This article seems to take that theory to a whole new level.  Do we really even need to read the book at all??  Or do we simply need to engage in conversations about the book to experience it as art?

If so, that could seriously shorten the time spent on our TBR lists :-)

This is a fascinating article. What do you think, Patty???

  1. This explains why I enjoy reading the book reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. I enjoy all levels and usually start with the 1 star reviews. When I'm done, I feel like I've read the book. I like how it takes away the guilt of not choosing to read the book. I had to read this article a couple of times to understand Bayard. His sentences were really long and deep! Ha!!

  2. hahaha. I agree about the sentence complexity of that piece! Worth doing a "close read" as we reading teachers like to say! But I hadn't thought about the connection with the book reviews on those sites -- and I think you make a great point! I'm sure that's why people enjoy checking there before choosing to read or purchase a book! Maybe that's a new take on book clubs -- since it's all about the discussion of the book, only one or two people need to actually read it! ;-)

  3. I'm going to have to ponder that idea about book club discussions. One of the aspects that is so interesting to all of us in the club is that even when we haven't liked it, we come away with an appreciation from the perspective of those who do.
